Retirement often brings new flexibility, along with plenty of new questions.
When do I apply for NZ Super?
What happens to my KiwiSaver account?
How will I cover the bills and still have room for the things I enjoy?
To help our members and their families work through questions like these, we’ve created Knowhow: Retirement, a free collection of guides and checklists on our website that you can use at any time.
What’s inside?
The guides cover five topics:
- NZ Superannuation – how it works, who’s eligible, and how payments fit alongside other income
- Using KiwiSaver in retirement – how your KiwiSaver account can fit into your plans as you approach and move into retirement
- Turning savings into retirement income – thinking through how you’ll pay the bills and enjoy life in retirement.
- Getting things in order – reviewing important documents such as wills, powers of attorney and bank authorities
- Leaving a legacy – time with family, involvement in your church or community, and what you’d like to pass on to others
Wherever you are on the journey
Retirement doesn’t happen all at once, so each topic has three guides that follow the stages people tend to move through:
- Thinking about retirement – when it’s on the horizon
- Preparing for retirement – when it’s getting close, such as the year before you turn 65
- Living in retirement – once it’s underway
You can start with the guide that matches where you are now, then come back to the others as things change.
Handy checklists
If you’re not sure where to begin, the checklists are a good place to start. There’s one for each stage, along with two quick guides: Questions people ask, and What changes and what doesn’t in retirement.
They’re short, practical and easy to work through at your own pace.
Family, faith and what matters most
For many people, retirement is a chance to spend more time with family, get more involved in church and community life, and think about what they’d like to pass on. The Getting things in order and Leaving a legacy guides help you think these through, including making sure the right people know where your important documents are and could step in to help if needed.
These can be meaningful conversations to have with the people closest to you, and the guides can help you get them started.
Share it with those you care about
Anyone can use Knowhow: Retirement. If you have a parent approaching 65, a friend who has just retired, or people in your parish who are starting to think about the next chapter, please pass it on. Sitting down together with a guide can make a big topic feel much more manageable.
