Helping first home buyers.

One useful reason to contribute to KiwiSaver, is when you come to buy or build your first home you can withdraw money from your account to go towards the cost of buying your house or land. The money can be applied towards a deposit (subject to conditions) or paid at settlement. This allows you to borrow less from your mortgage provider.

You must leave a minimum balance of $1,000 in your account and you cannot withdraw any amount transferred to KiwiSaver from an Australian superannuation scheme.

If you have owned a property before, and your financial position is considered to be the same as a first home buyer, you may be able to apply to Housing New Zealand to be considered for a withdrawal as a previous home buyer.

5 smart tips for first home buyers.

1. Set a clear deposit goal linked to your KiwiSaver

Know how much you’ll need for your first home deposit and how much of it can come from your KiwiSaver. Use your KiwiSaver balance as a foundation and build your savings plan around it. Use our KiwiSaver calculator to help you plan.

2. Make voluntary contributions

Even if you’re not employed or earning regular income, you can still top up your KiwiSaver with voluntary contributions. Every extra dollar helps grow your balance and gets you closer to your goal.

3. Check your eligibility for withdrawal

You must have been a KiwiSaver member for at least three years to use it for a first home. Confirm your eligibility early so you can plan with confidence.
