John was appointed to the Board by Tikanga Pākehā in August 2026.
A committed Christian, John is a former Secretary to the Treasury. His public sector career included roles in the Prime Minister’s Office; the Ministry of External Relations and Trade, The Legislative Department and the Statistics Department. Following his retirement from the Public Service, John was an Executive Director at the World Bank, where he represented 14 Asia-Pacific countries, chaired the Budget Committee and served on several other Board Committees. A former Chair of the Wellington Diocesan Board of Trustees and the Diocesan Risk and Audit Committee and a current advisor to the Wellington Diocesan Council, John has extensive other governance experience and is especially focused on pro-bono work, including with the Te Ara Charitable Trust and the (Christian) Order of St John.
John is currently the Chancellor of the Order of St John in New Zealand, Chair of the Board of Hato Hone St John and has been a member of the International Board of the Order of St John. He served as a Commissioner on Te Tira Ārai Urutā (the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Covid-19 Lessons) and has led other Inquiries and Task forces for the Government. John is a long-standing member of the Wellington Anglican Diocesan Council. He is the People’s Warden at Onslow Anglicans and a current member of General Synod and the General Synod Steering Committee.
John is married to Eileen, and has four adult children, two adult stepchildren and seven grandchildren.
