About us

The Board

The Board is the governing body. It is responsible for setting strategy, managing risk, monitoring performance and compliance.

We are blessed to have people serving on the Board who are committed to the retirement schemes and services the Board offers to the Anglican community and the broader Christian community in New Zealand.

The Board consists of eight members. They are a mix of specialist appointments and representatives from Church bodies.

The Financial Markets Conduct Act 2013 requires that one Board member be a Licensed Independent Trustee. Andrew Johnson is the current Licensed Independent Trustee member of the Board. The Licensed Independent Trustee is paid a negotiated fee for their service.

The Very Reverend Lawrence Kimberley (Chair) – BCom, ACA, BTheol
The Reverend Lawrence Kimberley has over 15 years of leadership and dedicated service. Most recently, he served as the Dean of Christchurch Cathedral from 2015-2023. His extensive experience includes current and past roles such as the current Chair of the Cathedral Grammar School, Member of the Standing Committee of the Diocese of Christchurch, Church Property Trustee, Archdeacon of Pegasus and Member of the St Mark’s School Board of Proprietors. Lawrence was appointed by representatives of the Dioceses in New Zealand and has been on the Board since 2000.

 

The Reverend Canon Isaac Beach BA, MBA – Ngāti Porou, Ngāti Kahungunu & Ngāti Rangitihi
Isaac has recently ordained to the Diaconate and has a professional background in entrepreneurship. He has experience with investment and capital fundraising to support research, development and growth across NZ start-up ecosystems. Isaac is a lateral thinker, cares about God’s creation and the sustainable stewardship of Church resources within Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia. He serves in Te Pīhopatanga o te Tairāwhiti and was appointed to the Board by representatives of Te Pīhopatanga o Aotearoa in 2020.

 

Kerry Burridge – BCA, Dip. Banking, MPhil (Hons)
Kerry is an experienced director, senior executive and international consultant who specialises in economic development, banking and finance. She is the Director of Business & Planning at the Diocesan School for Girls, Auckland. She is an independent specialist director on the board of the Bank of the Cook Islands (BCI), a role she held had since October 2013. She has worked extensively with international aid donors throughout the Pacific Island nations. Kerry was appointed to the Board by the Standing Committee of General Synod/Te Hīnota Whānui in 2018.

 

The Venerable Carole Hughes – Theol. M, B.Th (Hons.) Oxon
The Venerable Carole Hughes is a member of the Anglican Diocese of Auckland Episcopal Team (since August 2011) as full-time Archdeacon of Auckland. She has been Vicar-General since 2019. Prior to which she was Co-Vicar and then Vicar of St John’s, Campbells Bay, on the North Shore of Auckland. She was ordained in 1997 in the Diocese of Waikato and Taranaki, where she offered ministry at the Taranaki Cathedral and St Chads West New Plymouth. Carole is passionate about theological education and contextual understandings of Scripture, Anglican liturgy, and liberation theology. Carole was appointed to the Board by the ordained ministers of the General Synod/te Hīnota Whānui in 2023.

 

Andrew Johnson – BSc (Math), CFA
Andrew has over 35 years’ experience in the investment and superannuation industries. Currently he is a professional director and independent investment consultant specialising in strategic portfolio management. Prior to this Andrew was employed as Head of Asset Consulting for a global asset manager.

 

Tom Ricketts
Tom has worked in the banking industry for the majority of his professional life. He is currently a trustee of the Diocese of Polynesia, Chairman of HFC Bank and director of a number of companies in Fiji. He previously served as Chairman of Telecommunications Fiji Ltd and Deputy Chairman of the Fiji National Provident Fund. Tom was appointed to the Board by the Diocese of Polynesia in 2015.

 

Hugh Stevens – BSc, BE (Hons), MBA
Hugh has worked in the financial services industry for over 15 years, both in New Zealand and overseas. His investment industry knowledge benefits the Board. Hugh was appointed by the Standing Committee of the General Synod/Te Hīnota Whānui and joined the Board in 2015.

 

David Wallace – MBA, BMus
David is Chief Sales Officer for the New Zealand division of a global financial services firm. He was appointed to the Board by the Standing Committee of the General Synod/Te Hīnota Whānui and has been on the Board since 2012.

Opt-in fees for Board

The Board has introduced an ‘opt-in’ meeting fee policy for Board members. Under the policy, Board Members are entitled to elect to receive meeting fees for their attendance at Board and Board Committee meetings. The fee schedule is reviewed biennially. The total amount of opt-in fees claimed for the 2021-2022 year is $38,000.

Investment Committee

The Board has appointed an Investment Committee to manage the Board’s investments. In many respects, the Investment Committee acts as an external fund manager to the Board.

The Investment Committee is made up of experienced industry professionals who share empathy for the aims of the Church. They work closely with management and oversee compliance with stated policies and limits.

Current members

Brendan O’Donovan (Chair) – MCom (Hons)
Brendan is a professional director with over 30 years’ experience in the financial services industry. He has been a trustee for a number of superannuation funds and was a member of our Board from 2017 to 2021. Brendan joined the Investment Committee in 2017 and is currently the Chair of the Investment Committee.

Don Baskerville – BSc, AIA
Don is a business consultant with more than 30 years’ experience in the superannuation industry. He is an associate actuary and a member of the Institute of Directors. Don was a member of the Board from 1989 to 2012 and its Chair from 2003 to 2012.

Rosemary Hambling – BA (Hons), DipBS (Financial Planning)
Rosemary has extensive experience in investment markets having worked for major Australasian financial institutions for over 30 years, specialising in discretionary portfolio management and investment governance.  She works currently in retail product governance.  Rosemary set up Women in Super in 2002 to improve financial literacy on retirement saving for women and was a government appointee to the Government Superannuation Appeals Board. She is a member of INFINZ. She joined the Investment Committee in June 2021.

Wayne Head
Wayne has over 30 years’ experience in the financial services industry, including 24 years in estate and asset planning with leading New Zealand trust companies. More latterly he has been a financial adviser for a Wellington based financial advisory firm. Wayne is a trustee of the St Peters (Wellington) Endowment Trust Board. He was appointed to the Investment Committee in March 2021.

Kevyn Rendell – BA Hons, DipBS
Kevyn is a principal of Gould Steele & Co and has been a stockbroker for more than 35 years. He is a member of The Institute of Financial Professionals and an Authorised Financial Advisor.

Ross Tanner – MA (Hons)(Canterbury), MPA (Harvard), CFInstD
Ross is a professional director and management consultant.  In recent years he has chaired or served on the boards of Crown entities and companies, as well as private sector companies and charitable trust boards. During his 30 year career in the public service, which culminated in his appointment as Deputy State Services Commissioner, Ross was a Principal in the New Zealand Debt Management Office of The Treasury, working in the US and Euro-financial markets in New York and London. He was appointed to the Investment Committee in December 2019.

Suzanne Wolton – LLB (Hons), ACA, MinstD, Dip.Clin.Hyp
Suzanne has over 30 years’ experience in large commercial enterprises as a board member and senior executive. Suzanne also has broad experience in the not-for-profit and charitable sectors. Suzanne joined the Investment Committee in November 2021.

Administration

The Board employs staff in Wellington, led by the Chief Executive, covering Member Services, Finance, Investments, IT Systems, Compliance and Communications.

Member Services

The wonderful people of the Member Services team are the contact point for our members and provide a high quality professional and friendly service .

The team administers The NZ Anglican Church Pension Fund, The Retire Fund, Christian KiwiSaver Scheme, Welfare Fund, Health Fund, Basden Fund, Supplementary Support Fund, Baptist Union Superannuation Scheme and the Board’s mortgage portfolio.

The team brings deep experience in all aspects of our operations and comprises Bharat, Fe, Janet, Jay, Jo, Kathryn and Sara. Angela is our Compliance Officer. The team is led by manager Bruce Dutton, who has served the organisation for over 25 years.

 

Chief Executive

Margaret Bearsley (Chief Executive) – BTheol, LLB
Margaret joined Anglican Financial Care in September 2021. She is experienced in the financial markets from the regulatory side, having been in the legal team and then becoming Chief Executive, of the New Zealand Takeovers Panel (2004 – 2017). Before commencing with Anglican Financial Care, she was manager of the Accident Compensation Corporation’s Corporate Secretariat, giving her exposure to ACC’s investment governance. Margaret is committed to the Christian investment philosophy at the heart of everything Anglican Financial Care does.

Margaret is blessed to be supported by a strong and experienced professional management team of Bruce Dutton (Members Services), Chris Cheer (Systems & Reporting), Jamuel Enriquez (Marketing & Communications), Simon Brodie (Investments), and Tracey Chong (Finance).
